Can’t lose the last few pounds? Wish you knew a secret weight loss trick? Read on, and drink up…

Dehydration brings many evils: it can cause you to feel sleepy, confused and lightheaded. Severe dehydration can also give you muscle cramps, nausea, heart palpitations and eventually cause organ failure and comas. Are you drinking enough water?!

There’s another, less-known fact about dehydration: it prevents weight loss, and can cause water retention and even weight gain.

If you’re dehydrated, your body has to work harder than usual, and your liver is under stress. Your metabolism slows. Your body retains any water it can, causing your stomach to bloat. Dehydration causes the body to go into a state of shock, which can lead to weight gain. The body is essentially in “survival mode”, which means it hangs on to all the fat and calories it can as emergency stores.

On the other hand, drinking a sufficient amount of water can help promote weight loss. Drinking a glass of water before meals, for example, will help you to eat less and lose more weight. Water improves digestion and absorption of nutrients after you eat, which will improve your health

The water may help increase mindfulness, which will prevent you from eating too quickly. Also, sometimes, when you feel hungry, you are actually dehydrated. Some specialists claim that your brain is unable to distinguish between hunger and thirst. Drinking water can help you feel full throughout the day, and prevent unnecessary snacking. Water is also an excellent replacement for calorie-filled sodas or sugary drinks. Drinking caloric beverages can cause a lot of extra weight gain.

When your body is well-hydrated, it burns calories more effectively, and your metabolism is at its best. Also, it’s important to note that when you burn calories, the body creates toxins, and you need to drink water to flush those away. When you exercise, it’s very important to stay hydrated because you will sweat and lose water.

Water also helps your muscles function well. Dehydration can cause a reduction in blood volume, which may decrease the supply of oxygen to the muscles and make your muscles feel weak. Proper hydration will help muscles contract efficiently, and ease soreness.

A hydrated body is a healthy body, and water will give you more energy overall. With more energy, you will be more inspired to move and exercise more; therefore, you will likely lose weight. According to the Svelte Medical Weight Loss Clinic in Lake Mary, Florida, drinking 10 glasses of cold water can burn approximately 300 calories a day.

There’s one last thing to remember, not all water is created equal.  This is especially true of its ability to hydrate the body.
